MLA Teacher Refresher Course
Session 9: Using Short Films in the English Classroom

Short films are in every way short and sweet! Excellent for supporting literacy skills while making learning fun and engaging, they are also effective for students because they are visual in nature. By watching them, students come into contact with different accents and cross-cultural information. Hearing authentic language means learning faster, especially with the aid of gestures and facial expressions. Short films are a great resource for teachers too because they offer a short, narrative structure which evokes emotion. Using them, teachers are able to generate a wide range of discussions and lead into conversational and dramatical topics/activities, therefore encouraging the students to actively engage with the English language. Most importantly, their brevity allows us to be time efficient - a valuable asset in a classroom! As always, we will look at many activities that may be incorporated into lessons, all of which will be compiled in a detailed handout including worksheets and links, which will be sent to all participants in the webinar.
